Four generations of leadership in design and construction. J.B. Donaldson has built a legacy of excellence in the design and build industry. In 1910, Donaldson Lumber Company was founded by Bennett William Donaldson. Following in his footsteps, son John Bennett Donaldson Sr., and then grandson, John Bennett Donaldson Jr. each made their living in the lumber and construction business in Michigan. Close to 100 years later, great grandson John Bennett Donaldson III leads J.B. Donaldson Company, a premium commercial development and construction firm that delivers a quality project at a great value to clients. J.B. J.B. Donaldson performs construction services in multiple market sectors; industrial, medical, retail, multi-family and even custom homes. The organization reflects its diverse 100-year family history in construction and development.
J.B. Donaldson currently employs 25 seasoned construction professionals from project managers, superintendents, project engineers, designer and administrators to ensure the realization of our client’s vision.
Our organization’s drive to deliver on that promise has propelled J.B. Donaldson to annual sales volume of more than $40 million.
Our Design-Build project delivery system combines architectural, civil, entitlement and construction services all within one contractual agreement. We work closely with leadership to ensure transparent budget forecasting and a billing system that won’t take a client’s time or energy away from managing their firms operations.
Using this project delivery method a client can have as much or as little involvement in the process as they desire. The turnkey approach is a great option for busy clients that want to spend more time on their business and less time worrying about the construction process. J.B. Donaldson Company is the single point of accountability throughout all phases of a project, which greatly increases predictability and reduces an owner’s financial risk.
This option allows a client to design a project with an architect of their choosing. Once a design is complete, J.B. Donaldson Company will utilize our expertise to establish the budget, set a schedule and submit a lump sum proposal to the client. Upon full execution of a contract, J.B. Donaldson Company will manage the construction process, adhering to stipulated budget and scheduling milestones. J.B. Donaldson can also assist the architect and client in procuring entitlements.
The Construction Management approach gives a client ultimate flexibility and control over budgets and schedules. Clients are involved throughout the project design process and tracking the budget. Unlike the General Contract delivery method where a client hires an architect and engineer for designing and developing a site, J.B. Donaldson assists the architect and client in the construction design from start to finish. Throughout the design process, J.B. Donaldson is providing estimating and scheduling input.
In a construction managed scenario, trade costs are open for client review, as well as the subcontractor selection process. There are several advantages to this arrangement including: speedier completion of construction because bidding and building can progress as design and budget goals are met; changes to the design and budget can be made as the process moves forward, and design decisions can be paired with budget and schedule impacts.
Many times, prior to being awarded a construction project, a client will hire J.B. Donaldson for pre-construction services. These services include site feasibility studies, cost estimating, value engineering, scheduling, subcontractor qualification entitlement procurement, and site plan approval.

22 years of Progressive Leadership Experience
Bennett Donaldson, President of J.B. Donaldson Company, is a 4th generation builder. He founded J.B. Donaldson Company after spending his entire career in the construction industry. He began his “education” as a laborer for his father’s construction company. As time passed, he moved into superintendent and project management positions before finally branching out on his own in 1997. This lifetime of construction experience has exposed Bennett to all aspects of the construction process and ultimately became the cornerstone of the comprehensive construction, design-build business he proudly oversees today. Bennett is a high-energy manager, successful in building, motivating dynamic teams and cultivating a company culture in which staff members feel comfortable voicing questions and concerns, as well as contributing new ideas that drive company growth. He is a results-focused management professional offering 20 years of progressive leadership experience. Bennett transforms high-potential staff into outstanding leaders who demonstrate the creativity and savvy that is critical to financial, operations success, and providing client with facilities they require.

Karen is an award-winning Design Consultant who manages large-scale commercial interior projects. She is successful at listening to the needs of the client and collaborating on a creative vision. She is an innovative thinker who customizes each space in a unique way, with visually appealing and inspiring designs to meet the clients goals. Karen is skilled at finding cost-effective solutions and materials while creating excellent space plans, elevations and designs for all commercial projects, including Preliminary Floor Plan programming.

With more than 20 years of construction and program management. Art has invaluable expertise in construction management, cost estimating, phasing, scheduling, logistics, client moves, IT integration and vendor relations. Art is a firm believer that communication is what will ultimately lead to client satisfaction and he builds that into each project. His careful attention to detail and focus on planning, estimating and execution, carries a track record of excellence. Just ask any of his satisfied clients in the educational, health care, senior living, commercial, corporate and industrial sectors. His consciousness for his clients needs extends to completing projects within budget and on time. Art has managed programs of varying budgets. He has managed more than 2 million square feet of space with program values up to $130 million. Art is an avid Spartan fan and is a graduate of the Building and Construction Management Program at Michigan State University. He is an active member in many industry associations, his church and MSU Alumni boards. He has worked in many areas of the construction industry including Commercial Retail, Office, Health Care, Education, Non-Profits and Industrial. With the time that Scott has put into his career, he has gained many strengths allowing him to bring his projects to completion successfully. Conceptual estimating, Plan and Specification Estimating, Project procurement, Project presentation, contract negotiations, Contract and Scope writing, Scheduling, Situation Solutions and excellent organizational skills.

A Spartan graduate with a Master’s in Construction Management and a Bachelor in Civil Engineering, Sahil is a young passionate constructor. Clay B. Thomas

Clay is an accomplished real estate and construction lawyer who has helped numerous clients successfully navigate industrial, office, retail, multifamily and residential development projects. Clay is an energetic real estate executive with experience in many aspects of commercial real estate, including: development, law, management, construction, acquisitions, dispositions and leasing. Clay has an undergraduate degree (B.A.) and a law degree (J.D.) from the University of Michigan. Clay is a member of the State Bar of Michigan and serves on the council for its Real Property Law Section. Clay is also a Michigan Real Estate Broker.

With over 18 years of construction experience, Chris began by installing the underground conduit that powered the old Wonder Bread factory and now powers the Motor City Casino. With projects in over 30 states, he has completed work on light industrial buildings, 700-unit multi-family apartment buildings, retail buildings, country clubs and high-rise renovations for fortune 500 companies. Chris has worked in various capacities, including superintendent, field manager and project manager for companies such s Milzow Builders, Acme Enterprises, PCI and Edward Rose and Sons. Chris managed construction projects for GM, Ally Financial, Ulta Beauty, BCBS Michigan and Walmart. His experience, along with a B.A. Degree in Project Management, give him a solid understanding of differing construction approaches and help him think outside the box to provide exceptional results to his clients.
